3 mistakes that newbie photographers make while starting out in photography - Lessons Learned from 14 Years in business

If you're considering a career in photography, I’m here to share some valuable insights from my 14 years of experience. I’ve made my fair share of mistakes along the way, and I hope you can learn from them.

Mistake #1: Only Focusing on a Niche

One of my biggest missteps was limiting myself to a single niche. Instead, I’ve found that diversifying my skill set has led to greater opportunities. By branching out into video, marketing, web design, graphic design, and even renting out my home studio for passive income, I’ve kept myself busy year-round. Embracing multiple avenues has ensured that there’s never an off-season for my business.

Mistake #2: Obsessing Over Gear

When I first started, I was overly concerned about having the latest and greatest equipment. Currently, I shoot with a Nikon Z6, which is nearly a decade old. My lens collection isn’t extensive, and my flashes are budget-friendly. Yet, I consistently produce high-quality content that satisfies my clients. Remember, it’s not about the gear; it’s about how you use it.

Mistake #3: Lacking an Efficient Editing Workflow

In the past, I struggled with my editing workflow. Now, I keep it simple with basic edits. My clients appreciate receiving their photos within 48 hours, knowing they’ll get a straightforward yet polished look without excessive retouching. Using Lightroom and leveraging AI tools allows me to streamline this process, spending only about four hours on editing. The key is to under-promise and over-deliver, providing your clients with a satisfactory experience without sacrificing your time.

These are just a few mistakes I've learned from over the years. I’d love to hear about your experiences and any questions you might have. Let’s keep the conversation going, and remember to stay creative!
